Women expecting a baby should embrace themselves for changes to their mental and physical health during their pregnancy journey. Termed as the side-effects of pregnancy, these changes require the parents to stick together and handle them. At times, women may not even know or be confirmed if they’re pregnant and the changes may become visible.
In this blog post, we highlight the expected changes to the body during the first trimester of pregnancy and tips to get through.
Answering frequent nature’s call
As the baby grows from the size of a poppy seed to the size of a plum during the first trimester, pregnant women may feel the urge to urinate more. This happens because of the increase in pressure on the bladder due to the growing size of the baby. Since the bladder sits right under the uterus, the growing uterus pushes on the bladder, thus resulting in frequent urination.
A small tip to handle it is being patient and gentle enough. As the urge to pee won’t allay anytime soon, moral support from the partner is the need of the hour.
Vaginal Discharge May Change
Technically termed as Leukorrhea, the thin, milky white vaginal discharge increases during the pregnancy. The reason being, more estrogen in the system and an increase in blood flow. Considered normal during pregnancy, there might also be mild vaginal bleeding (spotting) that is normal and common.
Although vaginal discharge is a common occurrence in women, vaginal bleeding can be a bit concerning. So, it is necessary to consult a doctor if that happens.
Growing Belly Is Obvious
The most obvious change in the body of pregnant women is the expansion of the waistline as the baby and uterus grow larger. This change largely depends on the size of the woman's body before she got pregnant as in some cases, it is unnoticeable until the second trimester.
It is important for pregnant women to adapt to this visible change in the body with the support of her family and close ones.
Experiencing A Change In Breasts And Skin
Due to an increase in the circulation of blood flow in the body, the skin of pregnant women looks more rosy and shiny. People usually term it as “pregnancy glow.” Also, the influx of pregnancy hormones in the body may result in extra oil on the skin and flares of acne.
Changes in breasts are also inevitable once a woman gets pregnant. Hormonal changes prepare it for breastfeeding as they feel tender and swollen. The increased blood flow and changes in tissues are responsible for the increased size of the breasts. Pregnant women must be prepared for the growth and change of the breasts throughout her pregnancy period. Due to these changes, it is advisable to get new bras for full comfort.
Emotional Highs and Lows
Pregnancy is a beautiful experience in a couple’s life. As women prepare to give birth to their precious ones, they have to go through an emotional rollercoaster ride, thanks to the pregnancy hormones. Women may be overwhelmingly happy at one moment or may cry at the other, all this continues throughout the 40-week journey.
A supportive partner, meditation, exercise, and taking help from a therapist can guide pregnant women through it.
