Overcoming Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a journey that requires patience as a mother has to deal with several health conditions over a period of 40-weeks. One of the most common experiences during pregnancy is nausea. As it usually occurs in the morning after waking up, it is termed as morning sickness. However, it is not only limited to the morning sickness and can happen at any time of the day or night.

In this blog post, we will run you through the common symptoms of morning sickness and what are the effective remedies for it.

How Does The Nausea Due To Morning Sickness Feel Like?

Nausea is described as a discomfort such as heaviness, tightness, and a feeling of indigestion in the stomach that produces an urge to vomit at times. Pregnant women experience it in early stages i.e. in the first trimester. The earliest it could be experienced is just two weeks after conception.

Nausea caused by morning sickness is usually accompanied by other symptoms of early pregnancy that are as follows:

A miss or a delay in the period: Females may experience light bleeding after they are pregnant but that is less than a typical period. A missed period can be caused due to excessive weight loss or gain, fatigue, breastfeeding, high activity level, stress, illness, and change in birth control use.

Mood swings due to hormonal changes: People may feel happy at one moment and depressed at the other due to changes in hormone levels in the body.

Intolerance to certain foods: A sudden shift in cravings and aversions for certain types of food is also a common symptom. Pregnant women may start eating food they didn’t like and won’t touch the food they normally ate.

Fatigue, Headaches, and Lower Backaches: These are a few more common symptoms that a pregnant woman experiences. They can also be caused due to stress, PMS, poor sleeping habits, injury, poor nutrition, and overworking.

Nausea along with these symptoms may indicate that a female is pregnant, especially when there is a period miss. Morning sickness usually remains throughout the first trimester and requires a planned remedial action.

Simple Remedies For Morning Sickness

As it is common during pregnancy’s first trimester, pregnant women can minimize it in the following ways till the time passes:

Take a healthy diet high in protein and complex carbohydrates. Eat only the food you like, no matter what happens. Avoid foods that can make you feel uneasy like spicy and acidic dishes. Also, never let your stomach be empty, eat early, eat right before bed, make a habit of taking mini-meals six times a day instead of three large ones.

Keep yourself hydrated by taking enough fluids. Not feel like eating and drinking at the same time, try taking liquid between meals. As vomiting may leave you dehydrated, high and dry, it is important to take liquid or solids with high water content.

Avoid the smell of anything that triggers nausea. Be it cologne of your partner or smell of any food, stay away from them.

Rest properly and destress yourself through stress-reduction techniques like meditation, visualization, and prenatal yoga.

Lastly, if you are severely facing morning sickness, it requires a doctor’s attention. Consult your doctor to get some medications to treat nausea and vomiting.

It is recommended for pregnant women to take the aforementioned remedies to cure morning sickness. Although morning sickness is common, in no way it harms the baby inside the womb.
